Game of Thrones still towers over much of television fantasy, but its finale, "The Iron Throne," left many viewers disappointed. HBO has tried to atone with spin-offs like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and now a new series based on Baldur's Gate aims to give Westeros a serious run for its copper coins, silver stags, and golden dragons.

Led by Craig Mazin, the acclaimed Chernobyl and The Last of Us series creator, the show will pick up directly after the events of the 2023 RPG Baldur's Gate 3. It will follow familiar faces such as Shadowheart, Gale, and Astarion while introducing new protagonists, building on the RPG’s mythic lore rather than merely retelling the same narrative.

Baldur's Gate blends repulsive Lovecraftian body horror with sword-and-sorcery adventure: mind flayers and their parasite tadpoles infect brains to sustain a hive mind, a premise that recalls David Cronenberg's body-horror work.
