The Harry Potter films once shot scenes featuring Peeves the poltergeist, but those sequences were cut and the character never appeared. HBO's new TV adaptation restores Peeves to the story and has cast Peter Serafinowicz in the role. Serafinowicz is better known in the UK for his comedy work, including a self-titled sketch show and the Brian Butterfield character.

He is praised for his ability to vanish into roles, and many view him as a spiritual successor to Rik Mayall, who was previously cast as Peeves but whose footage was never released. HBO framed the series as especially faithful to the books, yet faced criticism over casting choices, creative echoes of the films and a tie-in with the Hogwarts Legacy games.

Including Peeves addresses a longstanding omission and adds a high-profile comic presence.
