HBO's Harry Potter Series to Premiere on Christmas Day
It can feel early for a new Harry Potter adaptation, since the films only concluded in 2011, but the franchise’s lasting popularity makes a return unsurprising. One striking aspect of the HBO series is its release timing: the first season is set to premiere very late in 2026, on Christmas Day.
Over the years the films have quietly become a wintertime habit for many viewers, with social feeds filling up as the weather turns and household traditions putting the movies on repeat during the holidays. That association wasn’t engineered by the studio — the latest film release had been Deathly Hallows – Part 1 on November 19, 2010, and while films 1, 2 and 4 also opened in November, others were spring and summer releases — it simply evolved.
Scheduling Season 1’s debut for Christmas Day feels like an acknowledgement of that accidental tradition. The timing should make it easier for fans already in a Harry Potter headspace to give the new show a try, even if they continue their annual movie rewatch.
