Hark the Ghoul demo mixes Lunacid vibes with Bloodborne gothic
A wave of King's Field–inspired first-person dungeon crawlers has arrived from indie studios, and Hark the Ghoul stands out from its demo. The game channels 2023's Lunacid but swaps that title's subterranean kingdom for a freaky, Bloodborne-style gothic city. The setup feels familiar: in life you were an anthropomorphic bug with a bug job in a bug kingdom, and in death you are deputized to explore, sword fight, and level up to put right what has gone wrong in bugburg.
Character creation uses nine backgrounds that change how NPCs react rather than altering core mechanics—for example, choosing the "Militiaman" background makes the first merchant assume you are a narc. Small, incidental details deepen immersion: the weapon viewmodel floats rather than showing hands, but the kick attack briefly displays a leg whose pants and foot vary by background.
Combat leans on a quick melee kick clearly inspired by Arkane's Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.
