Playing Final Fantasy 11 after so many years feels like returning to a desolate hometown: the landmarks remain but the people and the sense of belonging have shifted. I remember long summer nights sneaking extra playtime on a PlayStation 2 until a parent cut off the subscription, a memory that captures how fondly I still regard the game.

Getting back in is deliberately old-school. The PlayOnline service is cumbersome, with multiple IDs and confusing menus, and the original client struggles with modern systems. Modders have filled the gap: a tool called Windower brings modern resolutions, graphics options and useful addons that make the game playable again.

The game itself moves at a measured pace. Setup and simple tasks take time and the control scheme can feel clumsy, but the job system remains a standout feature: you can switch jobs on the fly, unlock 22 distinct roles and combine primary and secondary jobs to create deep, flexible builds.
