Guy Ritchie built a career on tightly edited crime films, and his two-movie Sherlock Holmes franchise crystallizes that style on a larger scale. Robert Downey Jr. stars as Holmes with Jude Law as Watson in the 2009 opener, bringing a playful, action-driven take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective.

Ritchie’s adaptations take creative liberties, favoring pace and humor over strictly cerebral deduction while making the Holmes–Watson relationship the series’ emotional center. The first film pairs witty one-liners with a Hans Zimmer score and striking visuals as Watson’s brief decision to marry pulls the duo back into a mystery of an occultist risen from the dead.

The follow-up, Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, brings in Moriarty with Jared Harris matching Holmes for intelligence and a stacked supporting cast that includes Kelly Reilly. It closes with a book-accurate ending that nonetheless left audiences wanting more.
