Guillermo del Toro Praises Apple TV’s Widow's Bay
Widow's Bay premiered on Apple TV in April and has quickly become one of the streamer's most talked-about shows. Created by Katie Dippold, the series blends horror and comedy as it follows a New England town cursed in different ways each episode. Matthew Rhys plays Tom Loftis, the mayor trying to turn the island into a tourist destination before the curse starts targeting him.
Guillermo del Toro praised the show on May 30, tweeting: "If I may — in my estimation— #WidowsBay may very well be the best streaming series in a long time...and hands down one of the most mesmerizing acts of narrative prestidigitation in Horror." Del Toro's eight Oscar nominations and three wins, including Best Picture and Best Director for 2018's The Shape of Water and Best Animated Film for 2023's Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, underline his standing in the genre.
There are clear echoes of del Toro's work in the series: a deadly fog, ghosts and a witch's spell, plus sweeping ocean views and shifts in color that heighten suspense.
