Guild Wars 3 will be more of an MMO than the original, but not like GW2
Guild Wars 2 is a full-scale MMO, while the original Guild Wars played closer to a mission-based ARPG with shared town hubs — it only felt like an MMO thanks to its large class roster and /dance emotes. ArenaNet studio head Colin Johanson set out a taxonomy for the series, calling the first game a "cooperative online RPG" that later picked up the MMO label, and describing the second as a true MMORPG that toys with genre conventions.
On Guild Wars 3 he says it "lands near the middle of the MMO spectrum … While it fits the definition of an MMORPG significantly more than Guild Wars Reforged does, it doesn't try to replicate the large-scale gameplay pillars that so uniquely define Guild Wars 2." Those large-scale pillars include map-wide events, boss battles, and server-based PvP, which Johanson says GW3 won't attempt to replicate.
