Grand Theft Auto 4 mod Heartland replaces Liberty City with rural Wisconsin

Heartland is a work-in-progress total conversion mod for Grand Theft Auto 4 that swaps Liberty City for a slice of rural Midwestern America. The mod favors quiet backroads and an eerie, liminal calm that recalls Fargo and Twin Peaks more than the city's bright lights, letting subdued suburban landscapes and wind-shifted streetlights set the tone.

You play Sharon, a young adult whose life revolves around video games and delivering food for the local pizza joint — a job that goes wrong and unfolds across about 30 missions as she explores worlds "she never knew existed." The setting draws on the developers' own suburban and exurban experiences, including one lead writer's years delivering pizzas in a Buick Skylark.

Instead of action-movie excess, Heartland focuses on post-graduation angst, the slow decline of the middle class and how larger economic and geopolitical pressures affect everyday life.
