After a difficult stretch, Intel may be mounting a turnaround: its handheld chips have been performing well and its Foundry business is taking on substantial orders. The Information says Google has ordered at least three million TPUs (Tensor Processing Units) from Intel, per two people familiar with the company, as TSMC’s capacity is stretched by the AI boom.

Google’s TPUs are designed for neural network machines and will fuel the company’s own AI services. The chips are also planned for sale to firms like Apple and Meta, and Google is expected to produce more than six million TPUs between 2027 and 2028, relying on both TSMC and Intel for manufacturing capacity.

Nvidia is reportedly testing Intel chips for its next major project, currently codenamed Feynman, which is said to combine four graphics chips into a single unit. A win there could help Intel’s Foundry gain a foothold in the gaming market.
