Google Photos settings I change on every new device — Latest news

I've used Google Photos for more than a decade and rely on its cross‑platform search and cloud backups, but I never install it and let it loose on my camera roll without first checking a few settings. A quick pass through account and backup options, AI controls, sharing, memories, and notifications keeps storage from ballooning and prevents features I don't want from running in the background.

First, I confirm the backup account and turn backups on with limits so only the folders and photos I choose are uploaded. I avoid full camera‑roll access by using limited permissions or selecting specific device folders, and I disable cellular backups to prevent surprise data charges.

When possible I run uploads overnight and choose Storage saver rather than Original quality to conserve Google Account storage. I also adjust AI features: I disable Ask Photos and, if I prefer, Gemini entirely. If I keep Gemini enabled, I narrow which Gemini features can run, limit personalization data, and review the activity used to improve Photos.
