The God of War: Laufey reveal put two things front and center: Faye confronting other gods in the afterlife, and a big, silly cube called Phranque. Fans have been charmed but some worried the cube might clash with the series' tone now that Kratos is sidelined. Director Ariel Lawrence says Phranque is meant to be serious.

She notes we don't get a great grasp of his personality in the short reveal — he only "got six or seven lines in the reveal" — and that Sony Santa Monica has no intention of "crowbar[ing] in gags or one-liners." Lawrence adds the team is "treating Phranque as we would any companion character," and that "his earnestness, his honesty about being in the moment is kind of integral to his character," while still seeking to "find his humanity." In the Everywhen, things are not great, and Phranque is meant to help Faye see the world as it is, not to be a joke.
