God of War Laufey shifts the series' spotlight away from Kratos to his dead wife Laufey, or Faye, as she navigates a perilous afterlife run by power‑hungry deities. The 20 minutes of footage shown at PlayStation State of Play in June 2026 highlighted a more luminous aesthetic, with sparkles, purple flowers and notable aerial combos.

Cory Barlog, Sony Santa Monica's head of creative, says the move is not a departure. Focusing on the softer, kinder and formidable Faye is "a different thing" from centring the perpetually scowling Kratos, but it remains "part of the larger tapestry" the studio wants to explore.

Barlog also stresses that "there's always going to be Kratos games" and that the team will "always tell stories about Kratos." He and director Ariel Lawrence compare Kratos to the trunk of the series and a 1,000‑pound truck that drives the franchise forward, while the new title gives the team "some place" to surprise players and show how characters connect — an expansion rather than a break.
