Global reparatory justice framework adopted at Accra conference
A global framework for reparatory justice was adopted at a conference in Ghana. Heads of state, governments and other officials approved the strategy on Friday at a hotel in Accra, the first major meeting since the UN resolution declaring the trafficking of enslaved Africans the gravest crime against humanity.
The document sets out an 18-point global framework, including commitments to ensure fair and adequate compensation for Africans and people of African descent affected by legacies of enslavement, colonialism, genocide and apartheid; to accelerate the return of cultural property, human remains, archives and heritage; and to pursue multilateral measures to address sovereign debt burdens through relief, restructuring and cancellation.
