Gilberto Mora shines as Mexico finish group with nine points; Ochoa farewell
Mexico secured a 3-0 win over Czechia at Estadio Azteca as Gilberto Mora announced himself and Guillermo Ochoa received a memorable farewell. The result completed a perfect group-stage run for El Tri, who for the first time finished a World Cup group with nine points and did so without conceding a goal.
Mateo Chávez opened the scoring in the 55th minute after good work from Luis Romo. Julián Quiñones doubled the lead six minutes later from a Jorge Sánchez assist, and Álvaro Fidalgo added the finishing touch in stoppage time after a pass from Roberto Alvarado. Javier Aguirre once again mixed rotation and control, having used every available outfield player across the group stage and leaving his side in strong shape for the knockout rounds.
The starting XI against Czechia averaged 27 years and 38 days, Mexico’s youngest World Cup lineup since 2006.
