Fumito Ueda, the creator of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, returned to Summer Game Fest with his previously-hinted-at Project Robot, now renamed Gen Atlas. A brief showing of in-game footage looked as beautiful as hoped, flying around what appear to be the ruined remains of a vast robot, and Ueda sat silently in the audience before the clip played, eliciting gasps from the crowd.

True to Ueda’s style, the sequence centers on a small figure in an imbalanced relationship with an enormous counterpart — this time two differently sized robots. A floating head eventually meets a collapsed body, which rises to connect with it, while a smaller, decaying robot fires on crowds of alien enemies in a striking action sequence.

The footage also included running, jetpacks, battles with goliath robots and fast tanks, all set in a broad, dramatic vista. It looks like an interesting departure for the developer and his team, while preserving many of his trademark features.
