Gears of War: E-Day PS5 port was mostly complete before Xbox reversed plans
With Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable coming to PlayStation 5 this year and next, Gears of War: E-Day stood out as a remaining Xbox holdout. A significant amount of work had already been done on a PS5 port before a recent decision halted those plans. At Summer Game Fest 2026, Xbox identified Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as exclusives for the green console family.
Both are first-party projects — E-Day due this year and Clockwork next — and are being positioned as linchpins in a renewed push toward more Xbox-only releases; that strategic outlook is relatively recent. Xbox has seen upheaval over the last six months: Phil Spencer retired in February and Asha Sharma took over, while the "This is an Xbox" publicity campaign was quietly shelved amid acknowledgement of the need for course correction due to flagging sales.
During SGF, Xbox CCO Matt Booty said live-service titles will continue to come to PS5, while single-player experiences will be judged case-by-case.
