Parenting young kids often feels like saying no on repeat. So for my daughter's 7th birthday, I decided to try something different: a "Yes Day," agreeing to her requests within reasonable boundaries. I first heard the idea years earlier from a friend who ran an annual "Kids in charge day," and after we introduced the concept when our daughter was 4 it quickly became one of her favorite traditions.

"Yes" didn't mean anything goes; for us it meant choices that were safe, local, and doable in a day. I let her lead even when it was uncomfortable: breakfast was a cream cheese bagel, then an outfit I almost redirected—red heart socks, faded floral pants, and an old pink shirt—but she wanted it, and that trust built confidence.

We went to National Harbor so she could build a bear with gift cards she'd been saving. A coffee stop delighted her, then a visit to a Black-owned bookstore where she chose a chapter book and a "Gracie's Corner" title she still loved.
