Gary Lineker again addressed the Messi–Ronaldo debate on The Louis Theroux Podcast, arguing that placing Lionel Messi above Cristiano Ronaldo is a matter of footballing fact rather than a personal slight. He praised Messi’s vision, passing and longevity, even suggesting the Argentine has outdone Diego Maradona in his lifetime and that watching him has given Lineker “20 years of joy”.

At the same time Lineker made clear he respects Ronaldo, calling him an incredible footballer whose drive and goalscoring record are extraordinary and would have made him the standout player in many eras. He added that no one has Messi’s particular ability, but insisted that saying so is not an insult to Ronaldo.

Lineker also revealed the comment damaged their relationship, saying Ronaldo no longer speaks to him after the remark. Both players are now focused on the 2026 World Cup.
