Games Workshop Blames Extra Finger In New Warhammer Artwork On Human Error
On June 8 Games Workshop posted new artwork showing MkIV Space Marines deploying on the battlefield alongside a tank. Fans quickly noticed that one Marine’s hand appeared to have an extra finger, which prompted accusations that the company had used AI to create the image.
The illustration is rendered in the familiar grimdark style, with large armored figures and armored vehicles. Zooming in on the Marine at the front reveals six fingers—five visible in front and an implied thumb behind the gun—which is what first drew attention.
Games Workshop denied the use of AI and attributed the anomaly to human error. “Does that Space Marine have an extra finger? Yes, but it’s not AI or early signs of mutation among the Traitor Legions,” the company said, adding that “The Horus Heresy art style, since its first edition in 2012, involves an artist blending miniature photography with art to create a dramatic scene.
