Gabe Newell denies Valve punishes developers, says gamers 'have enormous choice'
Gabe Newell defended the openness of PC gaming during a deposition in a US class-action suit that mirrors a UK case. He denied that Valve punished studios for selling games cheaper on non-Steam platforms, saying, "Valve does not have a policy or practice of dictating prices to third-party software developers on other platforms." When asked how Valve would respond to a developer selling a game cheaper elsewhere, he replied, "I'm confused by your question," and added, "Many of our partners and many of our customers are quite happy with the service that we're providing." Newell also rejected claims that Valve holds an illegal monopoly, arguing the company won the PC storefront competition through innovation and added features that draw players in.
