Fumito Ueda says GenDesign doesn't use AI for 'game development'
Fumito Ueda says he and studio GenDesign are not using generative AI to develop the upcoming sci-fi adventure Gen Atlas, except as a project management tool.
The studio uses AI for tasks such as "coming up with schedules," "summarizing meeting notes," and retrieving information about how to use new tools, the director said. "Everything that is considered game development," however, is "made by humans."
Platforms differ on disclosure: Steam requires developers to reveal controversial uses of generative AI, while the Epic Games Store does not, and Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has said Steam's requirement "makes no sense." Social media scrutiny has made checking a game's Steam page for such disclosures common, and that is how generative AI use in the upcoming Crazy Taxi remake was spotted.
