Fresh look at Total War: Warhammer 40k reveals massive, grimdark battles
The writer admits to being a Warhammer 40k dilettante: much of their knowledge comes from wiki-dives, they have never bought a Dan Abnett book and have never painted a miniature. The franchise can feel vast and collecting minis expensive, which has made it hard to find a place to start.
At the PC Gaming Show, Creative Assembly offered a fresh look at Total War: Warhammer 40k, the follow-up to their long-running Total War: Warhammer series. The fantasy stylings of the earlier games have been replaced by galactic combat between Space Marines, the forces of Chaos and a heavy emphasis on Orks.
The trailer on display highlighted combat at an enormous scale, with nightmarish battles and deaths-per-second described in the seven figures. The conflict plays out across many fronts, from ships flattening cities from orbit to individual Space Marines dueling on the battlefield.
