Former Three Lions captain Terry Butcher says he hopes Frank Lampard could one day be in contention to manage England after Lampard guided Coventry back into the Premier League, ending the club’s 25-year absence. Butcher praised Thomas Tuchel’s work but emphasised a desire to see more home-grown coaches lead the national team.

He admitted he has a soft spot for Coventry and would like to see Lampard consolidate the club’s place in the top flight and potentially move into the England job in time. On fellow ‘Golden Generation’ figures, Butcher suggested Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney can benefit from taking steps back to move forward.

He noted both have had mixed starts to their managerial careers — Gerrard savouring Scottish title success at Rangers before struggling at Aston Villa, and Rooney enduring short spells at Birmingham and Plymouth. Pointing to a limited pool of English candidates in the Premier League, with Sean Dyche and Eddie Howe among those mentioned, Butcher urged more coaches to come through the system.
