Former Naughty Dog artist says trailers cost four months of development
Naughty Dog was notably absent from this year's State of Play showcase, despite ongoing work on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and rumours of other projects. Del Walker, an artist who worked on The Last of Us: Part 2 Remastered, offered a simple explanation for the silence.
In a post responding to speculation, Walker argued that shifting studio resources to make a trailer drains actual development time. "Every time a [triple-A] game studio has to move resources over to making a trailer, it causes the game to lose about 4 months of actual dedicated development iteration time," he wrote, adding: "Look, do you want a new game or not?" Putting together public-facing footage is labour-intensive and requires top-down approvals, a cost studios regularly weigh around events like Summer Game Fest, Gamescom and The Game Awards.
Since Intergalactic has already been revealed, the studio would likely aim for a headline-grabbing update, such as a release date, rather than an incremental trailer.
