Three years after declaring the death of florals, John Lewis says a new print is making a splash with shoppers. Its high summer collection features everything from sardines and sprats to crabs, with starfish-shaped earrings up 300% month on month and a silky blue skirt covered in shoals of fish already on a waiting list.

In homeware, glass tumblers that stack to form the shape of a fish are selling 400% more, while a ceramic “gluggle jug” that gurgles as water is poured has become an outdoor dining essential; sales of versions from Wade Pottery are up 129% month on month. The wave of marine motifs follows the UK’s rising fascination with tinned fish, which has moved from a cheap cupboard staple to a bougie ingredient with jazzy packaging and “tin to table” brands.

Tesco says sales of tinned tuna rose 18% this month, a boost it attributes to TikTok influencers, and prices range from supermarket tins at 65p to gourmet versions from £12.
