Firefly remains a cult classic despite its brief run of 14 episodes and one feature film. Decades after its abrupt end, fans have sustained the series through comics, novels and campaigns; a 2020 revival idea stalled because Seth MacFarlane's The Orville was airing on Fox at the time, and more recently an animated series was confirmed with many original cast members attached, reportedly with Joss Whedon's blessing despite his noninvolvement.

The show premiered on Fox on Sept. 20, 2002, in a Friday night slot long regarded as the "death slot," and was canceled in December 2002 after 11 of its 14 episodes aired due to low ratings. Contributing factors included Fox airing episodes out of order—opening with 'The Train Job' instead of the intended double premiere 'Serenity'—marketing that emphasized action-comedy over its sci-fi/adventure scope, and interruptions in the run for baseball and November sweeps.
