Firefighters Investigate Meta Quest 3 Explosion in Maine Home
A Meta Quest 3 battery is suspected of starting a small fire in a Frankfort, Maine, home on June 11th; there were no direct injuries.
Home-security footage shows a resident left an external battery charging on a nightstand and then heard a sudden noise while outside. Cameras on the main floor captured red flashes and a pop, four dogs sprinting downstairs, and a small fireball rolling down the stairs followed by a flaming piece of Meta Quest debris.
The Frankfort Volunteer Fire Department posted on Facebook that the nightstand is about 14 feet from the stairs and the stairs are about 15 feet long, 'just to give you an idea how bad this was.'
While explosions like these are uncommon, rechargeable batteries are a known fire hazard. The report references warnings for Steam Deck modders and past issues with PlayStation Portables, and notes broader safety concerns around electric vehicles. The incident is under investigation and the home is being examined for any potentially harmful fumes.
