Pixar revealed a new animated short titled Loving Dory during its presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Ellen DeGeneres will reprise her role as Dory, with Lou Hamou-Lhadj directing and Mary Alice Drumm producing. The story follows Dory as she falls in love with a plastic bag that drifts into the ocean, mistaking it for a sea creature.

Hamou-Lhadj read part of the script for the Annecy audience and showed animation tests and concept art. The creative team confirmed the short will play in theaters before an undetermined film; Pixar has not yet named which release it will accompany, though the studio’s Gatto, set for Mar.

5, 2027, is an obvious possibility. If paired with a Pixar feature, Loving Dory would be the first short to play before a Pixar film in theaters since Boa ran ahead of Incredibles 2 in 2018. Pixar once regularly screened shorts before its features, but the launch of Disney+ shifted much of that output into the Spark Shorts series.
