Last year's surge of small "friendslop" games inspired by Peak left the storefronts full of lo-fi 3D riffs, survival crafting and roguelike mechanics grafted onto everything. I still value the wave of indie developers making cheap, creative games meant for hanging out with pals, but those trends can make it hard to find something purer: the linear, 7/10 co-op first-person shooter that just works as background entertainment.

Turok: Origins felt exactly like that at Summer Game Fest. The prequel plays as a three-player co-op shooter where you can switch between first- and third-person, pop off abilities that send magic missiles or beams at dinosaurs and aliens, and mostly mash buttons while chatting with a developer over a noisy headset.

It doesn’t try to hook you with procedural guns or a roguelite loop; it knows what it is and executes with workmanlike precision.
