Bungie is laying off most of the Destiny 2 team after the shooter MMO’s final update earlier this month. The PlayStation-owned studio said the game “fell short of expectations these past several years” and is restructuring while its next projects remain in “early incubation.” The cuts also affect some people working on Marathon, though support for that title is continuing.

This move is the latest in a string of mass layoffs across PlayStation, following the closures of Concord developer Firewalk Studios, Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus remake team Bluepoint, and Singstar developer London Studio. Sony acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022, and the studio’s troubles have been tied to a reported $560 million loss for the company; Bungie had already seen significant reductions under Sony and is now being pared down further.

Industry observers framed the situation as a consequence of the live-service push and management decisions, saying talented teams that built beloved games are paying the price.
