Explaining Aemond's Disturbing Kiss in House of the Dragon Season 3
Spoiler warning: early in House of the Dragon's Season 3 premiere, Aemond Targaryen kisses his mother, Alicent, on the lips — a moment many viewers found unsettling. The scene lands suddenly after a two-year wait between seasons and raises immediate questions about motive and fidelity to the books.
The show frames the act as an eruption of long-buried trauma and envy. Aemond has been portrayed as a bullied child and a pressured second son, raised while King Viserys declined and Alicent focused her attention on Aegon. That history of neglect and rivalry feeds into the scene, which the writers present through an Oedipus-like lens: Aemond seizes what he has spent his life wanting, convinced he has finally claimed his prize.
That kiss does not appear in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. The book often leaves personal relationships ambiguous, and the program’s choice to make Aemond’s impulses explicit departs from the source.
