Anthropic leaders Marina Favaro and Jack Clark suggested in a blog post that the world’s leading AI labs create an option to slow or temporarily pause frontier AI development so societal structures and alignment research can catch up. They proposed a partnership modeled on how countries monitor nuclear proliferation and warned the world does not have decades to wait.

An Anthropic spokesperson said the firm is not calling for a pause but wants systems in place that would allow one and is urging study of the issue now. The proposal drew swift skepticism. Some in tech called it self‑serving as Anthropic moves toward an IPO. David Sacks wrote that the company’s framing—comparing its work to nukes and warning of recursive self‑improvement—looked like an attempt to be nationalized.

Gary Marcus urged careful reading and suggested Anthropic was signaling an option it did not intend to take, while Francesco Bianchi described the move as convenient for a market leader seeking to freeze the status quo.
