Eve Hewson said she was intimidated by the very idea of Disclosure Day, and that the role of Jane Blankenship came after Steven Spielberg hand-selected her to read the script, having followed her since their work on 2015's Bridge of Spies. Spielberg told her he was "really proud" of her work and wanted to send the story to gauge her interest.

Jane begins as Daniel Kellner's (Josh O'Connor) love interest and soon takes on a larger role in the unfolding plot. Her most intense scene arrives midway through the film, when Colin Firth's character, Noah Scanlon, uses secretive alien tech to "dive" into her mind and extract information in an extended, torturous interrogation complete with blood and screaming.

On the day that sequence was scheduled, Hewson noticed men walking on the studio roof and learned President Obama was making a set visit.
