Euphoria fans 'shattered' over Rue dying in Season 3 finale
Fans on X were "shattered" after the Season 3 finale of Euphoria showed Rue accidentally overdosing on painkillers laced with fentanyl by drug lord Alamo Brown (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). "This ending completely shattered me," one viewer wrote, while another posted, "Rue bennet dying scene has me sobbing." Many pushed back on the choice, saying Rue had been sober and could have had a chance at a different life.
"Regardless of how beautifully it was done, the fact remains that rue died over being laced, she was sober and was free to have a good life! her dying is such a terrible ending, for a show that is meant to give hope for addicts!" another fan wrote, and others noted Zendaya’s silence this season made the finale feel even more devastating.
Creator Sam Levinson defended the decision, calling Rue’s fate the most "honest ending" for the story and saying he wanted to honor late cast member Angus Cloud. "People relapse. They f–k up. They’re not ready to get clean," Levinson said.
