After a four-year gap, Euphoria returned in April 2026 for an eight-episode third season that ran for eight weeks, with the final episode beginning to stream May 31. Created by Sam Levinson and starring Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney, the series became the most-watched show in the world on multiple occasions during its run.

The season already saw several major deaths — Nate Jacobs was taken by a shark and buried alive, Alamo was shot at Ali's strip club, and the drug lord Laurie died by suicide during a DEA raid — but the finale delivered the biggest shock when Zendaya's Rue Bennett died from an accidental overdose after taking Percocet pills laced with fentanyl.

Levinson said, "It felt like an honest ending. The honest ending is people like Rue don't make it," and added that he wanted to tell a story about addiction, grief and "for Angus and for people who weren't granted a second chance." The episode includes a dream sequence featuring the late Angus Cloud, who passed in 2023 from an accidental overdose.
