ESO shifts to seasons, revives Thieves Guild and adds Rumors system
In January, The Elder Scrolls Online moved from its long-running “chapter” model to a seasons-based approach, aiming for smaller, more frequent updates. Season 0 introduced the Gold Coast Bazaar, continued adjustments to core combat, and the Tamriel Tomes system.
Speaking with game director Nick Giacomini and associate design director Jason Barnes at Summer Game Fest 2026, the team said the chapter approach—an “18 to 24 months” effort with “all hands on deck trying to execute”—had been reliable but limited, making it hard to prioritize foundational changes.
The Thieves Guild returns in Season 1 with a new storyline and quests, and the team used that return to ease players into the seasons model. Barnes said the season lets them experiment while sticking to ESO’s strengths—“questing, storytelling, things like that.” Players who remember the original 2015 guild arc will recognize characters and see some lingering story beats wrap up, while new players will get a fuller picture of the faction.
