Epic CEO calls Steam AI disclosures 'really irresponsible of Valve'
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney criticised Valve's AI disclosure policy on Steam, calling it 'really irresponsible of Valve' and saying it makes it 'much, much, much harder for a game developer to have a chance of success.' He warned that requiring what he called a 'Scarlet Letter of AI' can invite 'a hater community trying to kill the game.' Sweeney argued generative AI can help smaller developers produce unique content more economically.
Using the example of making a flower pot model, he said the real value is in 'building the scene and building the game and building the narrative, and the gameplay, and making it awesome, and giving it a unique feel,' and that 'giving it a unique feel' can rely on AI.
He warned developers may have to choose between avoiding tools that boost productivity and risking failure against competitors who use them.
