England suffer heaviest defeat under Wiegman and lose automatic spot
England are on the brink of having to navigate the play-off route in Women's World Cup qualifying after a 4-0 defeat to Spain in Mallorca, the Lionesses' worst result under Sarina Wiegman. A draw would have been enough to secure their spot in Brazil next summer, but goals from Patri Guijarro, Alexia Putellas and Claudia Pina put Spain ahead with one game to go.
England began qualifying with a perfect record, including a 1-0 win over Spain at Wembley in April, and they had early chances in Mallorca. Spain also threatened early; Putellas' cross found Edna Imade and forced Hannah Hampton into action, while Keira Walsh's effort flew narrowly over Cata Coll's crossbar.
The game changed when Guijarro nutmegged Georgia Stanway and struck from range, her shot aided by a deflection to beat Hampton. From that point England looked disorganised as Spain carved openings, though poor final balls initially let the hosts off the hook.
