El Tigre creator Jorge R. Gutierrez announced Punky Duck, one of a trio of new AI generated animated series being launched by Amazon, and the reveal prompted swift backlash. Two days after the announcement, Gutierrez said he was stepping away: “I have decided to drop out of the AI program at Amazon,” posted Gutierrez.

“My intent was to showcase artists, both new and seasoned, both inside and outside the studios, driving this new tech. My sincerest apology to those I upset. I promise to do better moving forward. Thank you for your patience with me. I will try harder.” Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro weighed in by promoting I Am Frankelda, a Mexican stop motion feature he aided in producing, and stressing that animation should be human-made.
