Edward Bluemel cast as Hercule Poirot in new six-part reboot
Edward Bluemel will play Hercule Poirot in a new six-part series titled Hercule. Poirot first appeared in Agatha Christie’s 1920 novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles and is known as a fastidious Belgian detective with a logical approach to crime and a distinctive waxed mustache.
The role has previously been taken on by actors including Albert Finney, Peter Ustinov, David Suchet and Kenneth Branagh. The series is billed as "an intimate study of Hercule the man and an epic portrait of Britain between the wars," and will take a magnifying glass to three of Christie’s stories while charting Poirot’s early friendship with Captain Arthur Hastings, his initial encounters with Scotland Yard’s James Japp and the introduction of a single nemesis.
Rather than depicting an established, older detective, Hercule follows Poirot as he solves his first cases in London before becoming famous; Bluemel, at 33, is notably younger than many past portrayers. The move recalls the series Young Sherlock on Prime Video.
