Warning: Spoilers ahead! Do not proceed unless you’ve watched the “Dutton Ranch” episode 5, “Peaceful Find Peace.” In that installment, Dwight (Ray McKinnon) — an aging cowboy who had befriended Carter (Finn Little) — is killed, leaving Carter distraught. Carter, the adopted son of Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), had been secretly skipping school to work for Dwight, an older cowboy who liked to drink, nap and dish out advice.

Viewers learn Dwight kept a leopard in an enclosure, which impressed Oreana Jackson (Natalie Alyn Lind) when Carter invited her over. Sheriff Wade (Josh Stewart) and his officers stormed Dwight’s property as Carter and Dwight tried to run; the cops used excessive force to tackle Carter — and kill Dwight.

"He had a knife," the sheriff said. At the police station, Sheriff Wade told Carter Dwight was a "drunkard," an "insurance fraudster" and a "thief" who "stole from the sick and elderly." Carter fired back, "He was my friend.
