Dutton Ranch has emerged as a worthy successor to the Yellowstone franchise, preserving much of the drama and action that made the original a sensation while carving out its own identity with new elements and characters. Kelly Reilly's Beth Dutton keeps her fire, now tempered by a more calculating role as the matriarch of a relocated Dutton legacy.

The series has taken special care to establish Finn Little's Carter. Introduced in season 4 of Yellowstone as an impoverished orphan whose father died of a heroin overdose in the same hospital where Beth was watching over her recovering father after an assassination attempt, Carter grew into an echo of Rip.

In Dutton Ranch he is treated as Beth and Rip's son, and his relationship with Oreana steps into the narrative space once occupied by young Beth and Rip. Although Carter has no Dutton blood, the show makes clear he is being set up to carry the family legacy on the new ranch in Texas.
