Dutton Ranch Confirms a Harsh Reality of Yellowstone Franchise
The premature end of Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone left room for a sequel, and Dutton Ranch has stepped into that role. Across seven episodes it delivers a Beth- and Rip-centric story that echoes the original's drama, sudden violence and intrigue, while a strong supporting cast and a new setting give the series its own momentum.
Still, the modern setting forces familiar beats to return. Plotlines such as Carter's relationship with Oreana mirroring Beth and Rip's courtship, and the ongoing struggle to keep a legacy ranch financially viable, make Dutton Ranch feel close to a sixth season of Yellowstone.
Where the franchise's prequels change the world by shifting eras—1883, 1923 and the upcoming 1944—this sequel must contend with present-day laws, regulations and communications, which constrain some storytelling choices. Despite those limitations, the series has found fresh angles.
