After concluding it is "not an MMO" but a "complicated" survival game with online play, Funcom will add a single-player mode to Dune: Awakening. The game launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X on September 22, and single-player arrives the same day along with the final act of the Book One story.

Single-player can be chosen at the start and offers three preset difficulties plus "full manual customization" for XP, enemy strength and harvest speed. "All the NPCs are here, but no other players," the studio says. The Deep Desert is fully available, the map never resets and buildings are never wiped; the Coriolis Storm remains as a weather event but is less destructive, and the Landsraad endgame simulates other players engaging with the faction conflict.

Funcom says, "We're putting characters – not servers – at the center of the experience." Single-player characters remain exclusive to that mode, while private and self-hosted server characters can move between those servers.
