Duck off: Merlín barred from Mexico game under Fifa animal ban
Merlín the duck’s bid to see El Tri live hit a snag when he was barred from Mexico’s match with Czechia on Wednesday. He had been granted access to the Estadio Azteca grounds to film a segment with Televisa. Under strict security protocols he travelled inside a transport crate with owner Carla Gómez and her son Cristian, as curious fans gathered to catch a glimpse of the world’s sixth-most famous duck.
He was not allowed to watch the match itself because Fifa prohibits animals from entering venues to safeguard their wellbeing. A Fifa spokesperson confirmed Merlín was permitted to enter the perimeter but not the stadium, and did not offer further comment. “These last few days have been crazy, we’ll never stop being grateful for what we’ve experienced,” Carla Gómez said.
“Everyone is truly amazed by Merlín.” Merlín, a two-year-old social media phenomenon, has become a familiar sight in the capital in a green Mexico jersey while accompanying his family as they sell drinks.
