After a long hiatus, the Shrek franchise is back. DreamWorks has scheduled Shrek 5 to hit theaters on June 30, 2027 and is preparing a Donkey origin film to follow one year later.

Titled Donkey, the animated prequel will star Eddie Murphy and is set to open on June 30, 2028. Charlie Bean will direct, Matt Flynn will serve as co-director, and Rebecca Huntley is producing.

Talk of a Donkey spin-off began in 2023. Murphy confirmed the project in 2024 and began voice recording in September 2025 after completing work on Shrek 5; the original plot focused on Donkey, his wife Dragon and their donkey-dragon children.

Donkey is scheduled to open the same day as Dynamic Duo, a DC Studios stop-motion film about young Dick Grayson and Jason Todd that is not part of the DCU. The Donkey release arrives a year after Shrek 5, which reunites Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz and adds Zendaya, Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo as Shrek and Fiona’s three children.
