Doctor Who is in its worst shape for decades. Low ratings, Ncuti Gatwa leaving the TARDIS behind after just two (shorter) seasons, and a baffling Billie Piper-shaped cliffhanger have left the sci-fi classic in desperate need of a doctor and a Doctor. The BBC has canceled the previously announced 2026 Christmas special, and showrunner Russell T Davies and production company Bad Wolf are departing.

A long break may be the best option. The series has been on a downward trajectory, with past Doctors Jodie Whittaker and Ncuti Gatwa saddled with poor writing that did a disservice to their enormous, history-making talents. Removing Doctor Who from the Christmas schedule is dramatic but understandable.

Holiday episodes have yielded some of the show’s most experimental, joyous chapters, yet a one-off special to bridge eras would likely feel like a halfway house, satisfying neither long-term fans nor the next generation the series needs in the streaming era.
