Doctor Who needs a 10-year break
The BBC's cancellation of the Doctor Who 2026 Christmas special, along with the departure of Bad Wolf Productions and showrunner Russell T. Davies, has left the long-running series on pause. Many fans now expect a lengthy gap before the show returns, and while shelving a franchise with such a storied history is painful, a hiatus may ultimately be beneficial.
Views differ on what went wrong. Some point to Davies's return—he led the 2005 revival and later steered the series through Disney's involvement during Ncuti Gatwa's era—while others blame Disney's handling and internal politics. Gatwa's regeneration after just 18 episodes has left parts of the fanbase particularly sour.
Doctor Who has been put away before. The BBC axed the series in 1989 amid worries the show had run its course, budget pressures, production demands, and concerns about violence on television.
