Doctor Who may not return until 2028, insiders say
People close to Doctor Who warn the series may not be back on screens until 2028 or later after the BBC cancelled a planned Christmas special and showrunner Russell T. Davies and producer Bad Wolf walked away. One producer suggested the series could be rested for as long as five years, saying the overhaul facing the show is bigger than a festive one-off.
Instead of appointing a new team directly, the BBC plans to put Series 16 out to competitive tender under its royal charter — a bake-off-style process in which producers pitch to take the show on. The same route was used recently for the UK medical drama Casualty, and it can run for up to six months before a winner emerges.
Early appetite has been muted.
